2017 is going to be a year of online content again. Every year, increasingly more people are using online media to educate and entertain themselves. There are many ways to encourage audiences to visit your brand, but blogging is still going to be an important aspect of your online marketing in 2017. So here are some blogging tips to help you out.
1. Use Grammarly Or Another Grammar Checker
Whenever you took your English qualifications, at whatever level, doesn’t mean you automatically have current language skills. Like other areas of our society, language and grammar changes. What might have been current just a decade ago is now out-of-date.
That is why using programs like Grammarly, which are updated to conform with latest trends, can be so powerful. They can also adjust the text for different purposes.
Writing school reports or university theses is different to writing for a website or blog. Yet it’s important to get the style right for your brand and its audience. Some audiences want longer, in-depth more evidence based articles while others might suit short ‘steps-to’ type guides, etc.
Here at TwoFeetMarketing, we’ve recently introduced a variety of blogging styles, so each week we have something for everyone, whether you really want to get stuck into a longer article, read something personal from the brand, or find actionable steps to overcome a challenge. This has proven to be popular.
3. Forget ‘That’
While Grammarly is great for most writing needs. The human touch is still very important. Here are a few tips to help you improve your writing:
- Remove ‘that’ where possible,
- Keep your sentences short,
- Keep your paragraphs short,
- Check for inconsistencies,
- Consider the flow of the piece,
- Use thorough explanations, (but consider what your audience would understand), etc.
4. Write Every Day
The best writers spend time every day getting their thoughts on paper. Even if you don’t publish it, write every day. This will improve your writing and help you focus your efforts. It can also help to have a backup of writing for when times are tough, and you’re not able to write.
5. Write Weeks In Advance
While there is something to be said about newsjacking, you should have most your written work prepared weeks in advance. This provides you with the slack to allow you to take time off when you need it most (i.e. when you are sick).
When you do have important news to publish urgently, you can reassign pre-planned titles to another date.
6. Pre-plan Your Topics
While writing whatever comes to mind is certainly one option, it doesn’t always give the best results. One issue is that you might cover one topic too much and another not at all. This can damage your SEO and distort the image prospects have of your expertise.
7. Market Your Blogging Content
While your blog will help to improve your SEO results and generate traffic organically. It will also not be recognised unless you have a strong social media presence. All content should be shared on Facebook and Twitter as a minimum but you should also consider using other platforms such as:
- Linkedin – For business related articles.
- Google+ – For SEO.
- Pinterest – For a visual content strategy.
- Medium – To show your writing to more people.
- BizSugar – For sharing your content if you have business articles.
8. Use Media In Your Articles
Visuals and audio snippets in your articles are a great way to engage your audience. Content with videos are enhanced and can result in a better engagement rate. Posting videos on your website is fairly easy. If you use a WordPress site and want to post a YouTube video, simply use the URL link.
9. Use Email To Increase Returning Traffic
Customers who have signed up to your mailing list are going to be very interested in your blogging content. Therefore, send out a small summary of what content you are publishing on your site to your mailing list. The more times that people read your content, the more convinced they will be of your expertise.
Newsjacking is one of the best techniques to stay current with an audience. Use the latest news and stories to deliver key messages about your industry. These types of articles can also be used to generate good inbound links and boost traffic in the short term.
Of course, this does require you to be able to write, edit and publish content quickly. If you can achieve this, you can succeed.
BONUS 11. Build Inbound Links
If you want to be successful in your blogging career, you need to build inbound links. There are several ways to do this. One is them is to ask people in your industry to read your content and then link to it from their websites.
This can help you improve traffic and increase your ranking on search engines.
BONUS 12. Write For Your Audience Not You
You might think something is of interest to your audience, but they might not. Remember to take your industry hat off and put on your customer hat. What do they want to read, what do they need to know? If it helps, consider answering questions they have asked you as a basis for your next blog post.
BONUS 13: Publish Regularly
When we publish once a week, our traffic drops. When we publish three or four times a week – our traffic is usually double. Therefore, the more content you can get written and published the more people you will have on your website and reading your content.
