One of the largest challenges for businesses is being on top of the Google search results. With so many purchases started with a Google search, it can be crucial. However, there are many SEO companies out there that will take advantage of that desire to be at the top and sell you services that are wrong for your business.

The fear of not being found is real, but how you go about solving that issue is different to what some companies will suggest. For instance, if you are a local business, we’ve known SEO companies to provide reports about how you aren’t ranking for searches in areas that aren’t relevant to you.

This is designed to play on your fears and make you sign up for their services. However, it is a complete waste of time. If you don’t want to provide a service in a certain area, why do you want to rank for it and spend money getting there? Instead, it is better to concentrate on ranking for locations that are in your operational areas.

So what makes you prone to the bad practices of some SEO companies?

1. You Don’t Understand Digital Marketing

This is a particular problem. Some ‘SEO providers’ play on this by calling their reports ‘website reports’ or ‘search reports’ and then provide you with information that is irrelevant. They also note that you probably don’t know what is meant by particular terms like meta tags, header tags and backlinks.

2. You Don’t Monitor Your SEO

One of the most likely reasons why you are prone to the bad practices of SEO companies is that you don’t monitor your SEO results. This is very common, but we caught one company when they contacted a client of ours, and we noticed that their report missed off the key terms that they were ranking first for.

3. They Contact You

Most SEO companies will contact you offering a free SEO report. Firstly, think very carefully about this. It is actually illegal for them to contact you unsolicited, especially if you are a sole trader or there are personal details within your email – digital commercial communication laws state you must have given you permission. If they’ve done that, what are the chances that they are going to provide you with quality services that are legitimate? There are Black Hat SEO techniques that can damage your rank or get you banned from Google and repairing the damage is tough.

4. They Say You Aren’t Indexed

We’ve seen reports stating that the website in question isn’t indexed. This is fine, but the report can’t then give you a ranking on Google. If you site isn’t indexed, then you wouldn’t have a rank.

5. You Aren’t Doing Well Online

If you aren’t getting the leads through from your website, there might be several reasons. Firstly, you could be relying on one communication channel only. Digital marketing has changed how consumers make purchasing decisions. 80% of purchases can take between five and twelve interactions, so if you are relying solely on your website, you are like to be disappointed.

Instead, you need to start thinking of integrating social media, PPC and email marketing to help your business acquire customers online. And don’t forget your offline marketing either, it can support your website marketing.

These companies are looking to make money and do so by getting as many customers as possible because the life span of their customers is often very short.
